1 John 1 : Review~
I have talked about how when I journal I take time at the end of each week usually on Saturday and Sunday and I’ll review what I’ve read during the week and what the key passages were that the Lord spoke to me thorough. I think it is important that Word not just be something we read and move on but rather we really take time to apply it and live it.
So, at the end of each week I’m going to work hard to post my reviews. I truly do hope that you will begin to apply some of these Spiritual disciplines to your life.
* prayer * journaling * studying * quiet times alone with you and God *fasting.......... ( More on these later on in Jan.)
This chapter is really beautiful, Truly! Let’s just recap quickly:
John starts this chapter off in verses 1-4 with clearly stating what they have been doing and whom they have been with. He makes it clear what they have seen, heard , and done. He talks about wanting to proclaim it to them and share it with them. He ends his opening statement with : “ And these things we write, so that our joy may be made complete.” Verse 4.
I love that verse!
* I presonally studied further about what John was meaning when he said:
“that our Joy may be made complete”. There will be more on this in Chapter 2.
Then verse 5: “And this is the message we have heard from Him(Jesus) and announce to you, that God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all.”
We talked about God is light and James 1:17 “Every good thing bestowed and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation, or shifting shadow.” We thought of words that came to our minds about light and then took time to think about how the Light is a great picture word for God. We pondered on verse 5 : “…God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all.”
This verse really caused me to realize that God is just amazing. I thought back to my childhood and how afraid of the dark I was and how by just cracking my bedroom door and having that one stream of light come in and hit me on the face was enough to make me feel secure. How much more the Light of God our Father through Jesus Christ causes us to feel safe when we are walking in His Light! I love that picture. I was absolutely struck by this verse “is no darkness at all” and in James “with whom there is no variation, or shifting shadow”. -
During the day I really thought about God and this picture, how He gives us such security in His Son! We have nothing to fear in Him!
I decided for the day that if I got upset or stressed I would just walk in the LIGHT! Making myself fully aware that in Him there is no Darkness and I was amazed how this really did help my attitude. J
Verse 6 was full of meat! :
“If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet we walk in darkness, we lie and we do not practice the truth.” 1 John 1:6
We talked about some questions: Fellowship with Him? Walk in Darkness? We lie? Practice the truth? All of these we discussed and ultimately it came down to making sure that 1. We do have fellowship with him and that means being a Christian and walking in a right relationship with God through Jesus Christ. 2. We looked at what it really means to walk in Darkness, and to take a few minutes to reflect back to verse 5 and then realize that we have to truly live out our live in the Light not in the Darkness because as Children of God, being in fellowship with Him, that could only mean being in the Light not in the Darkness; because “in Him there is no darkness at all”. 3. We looked at how we can lie not just in what we say but our lives can be a lie as well. Saying we are one thing and yet doing something else is a lie. Being a Child of God means we are to have a standard to which we live our lives. 4. We then finished verse 6 with we do not practice the truth but instead of stating the obvious we asked the question. Practice the truth? We actually looked at what it means to practice the truth and that would be through walking in the light, living a life in word and deed that says we are truly the child of God we say we are.
*for me it was “another” reminder of how we need to be light to those around us and how what we say and what we do need to be in agreement. Not living the Christian life just on Sundays.
I memorized 1 John 1:6 “ if we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.”
Verse: 7-10
Verses 7-10 dealt with Relationships:
Walking in the Light as Christ is in the Light enables us to have a “right” relationship with God and also allows for our relationship to good with one another.
The Key Verses from Chapter 1:
1 John 1:6 “ if we say that we have fellowship with Him, and yet we walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth;”
1 John 1:9 “ If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleans us from all unrighteousness.”
