Matt. 4:4
“But Jesus told him, No, the scriptures say, ‘people need more than bread for their life; they must feed on every word of God.’”
Matthew 4 is all about Jesus’ experience in the desert. He’s been baptized and the Father has now shown His approval of Jesus. Now just as John the Baptist said to the Saducees and the Pharisees it was time to “Prove by the way you live that you have really turned from your sins and turned to God.” While I know Jesus was born without sin He was still nonetheless tempted with sin. He had to make the choice to live a life that exemplified one that was devoted to God.
** Ever wonder why there were only 4 temptations recorded?**
I’m not sure why but I think they are the 4 that Satan uses the most and may change up how they are done but the end results are usually these 4 they try to rob God of what is RIGHTFULLY HIS!
The first is :
“If you are the Son of God, change these stones into loaves of bread.”
Jesus responds: “ NO! The scriptures say, ‘People need more than bead for their life; they must feed on every word of God.’”
The cross reference for this verse is: Deut. 8:3 but read verse 2 and then read 3.
“ And you shall remember all the way which the Lord your God has led you in the wilderness these forty years, that He might humble you, testing you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. And He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord.”
This is so key! God allows situations to happen and times of temptation to see if we will be faithful to what we know.
IMPORTANT: God does not tempt but allows it for our good.
1 Corinthians 10:13 “No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond, what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it.”
So what does this tell us? Temptation can also be seen as a time of TESTING? I would say yes! Satan desires to tempt us in ways to lead us to do what he knows is against the Father’s will. Or to try to disqualify us of our call and purpose set by the Father. 1 Corinthians 9:27 “ but I buffet my body and make it my slave, lest possibly, after I have preached to others, I myself should be disqualified.”
We have to realize that when we go through a time of growth and maturing that testing will likely follow. The enemy wants to disqualify us by making us fall into temptation.
So, today as you read through Chapter 4 of Matthew remember to put on the full armor of God. Eph. 6:11 “ Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.”
Lord I pray that I would make Your Word living in my life. May I truly live out the Truth in Your Word. Today, Lord as I go about my normal routine I pray that I would be mindful of my actions, my words, and my testimony to those who are lost around me. May I not disqualify myself because I was undisciplined.
Thank you Lord for how you continue to set truth before us and how You give us the way of escape and how we can truly be Victorious in the life You have called us to live.
It is in Your name I pray,
The Name of Jesus….
Amen……..
